Defending Alec

Last week, an audio tape of a phone message Alec Baldwin left his daughter Ireland was released to the media. On it, Baldwin berates his 12 year-old daughter like a crazy man who skipped about three doses of his medication.

It’s difficult to listen to the tape because additionally to its raw vulgarity, it is impossible to not feel extreme empathy for the child involved in this nightmarish scenario.

Here’s where the nightmare gets worse: People with public podiums (such as the verbal equivalents of the Energizer bunny on The View) have the audacity to pretend there’s an explanation for such reprehensible behavior. Regardless of the antecedents between Alec Baldwin and ex-wife Kim Basinger, it’s NEVER ok to call your child a “rude, thoughtless little pig” or to yell out that “you’re going to straighten them out”. I couldn’t care less that Alec Baldwin is a brilliant actor and that he’s one of the most entertaining talk show guests to have, child abuse is what it is, regardless of who it comes from. Had Alec Baldwin been your average mailman, there would have been no hesitation into condemning his actions. This Hollywood veneration has gone too far. Put a sock (or a Twinkie) in it, Rosie.
