Clear And Present Danger

Pakistan’s loudest voice for democracy was silenced yesterday. Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a scenario that must have played in her head, a million times. I remember as a young loud mouth, being in awe of her election at the tender age of 35. Simply historic. Madame Bhutto had hundreds of millions of dollars in the bank, was a much sought after public speaker and had a very comfortable life in London. Despite these cushions, she decided to return to Pakistan, her homeland. A thirst for Power? Maybe. But mostly, it was her audacity to hope for democracy in Pakistan that brought her back. The word patriotism has been very much misused since 2001. Today, we are reminded of its true meaning.
